The Balangoda Police said that a group of fifteen persons who broke into an animal farm in Induranpitiya,
Balangoda had tied the security guard to a tree and stolen 55 pigs.
This theft had taken place at dawn day before yesterday (14). The owner of the pig farm had complained to the police that the value of the stolen pigs was Rs. 1.5 million. There had been piglets among them as well.
The guard together with his wife and four-year-old child live in a room on the farm premises. The guard had told the police that someone had come and knocked on the door of the room at about 12.30 am and he had seen a group of persons outside the door when he opened it. He had stated further that this group had locked his wife and child in the room and tied him to a Teak tree and taken the lorry they had arrived in to the pig pen, loaded the pigs that were there and driven off.
When the guard was questioned, he had revealed that in addition to the lorry a cab had also entered the farm premises and that after the pigs were loaded, they had opened the door of the room before leaving. He stated further that after the thieves left, his wife had come and untied him and that then he had informed the owner of the farm about the incident.
According to the guard, the entire theft had taken about one and a half hours.Police said that based on the behaviour of the thieves, it appeared that they were very familiar with the farm. A top police officer of the Balangoda Police said that investigations are under way to catch the thieves.
