President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has issued an Extraordinary Gazette Notification effective from January 28, 2025, regarding the import of vehicles into Sri Lanka.
In his capacity as the Minister of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development, the President issued the notification under the Import and Export Control Regulation Act of 1969. The notification, Gazette No. 2421/04 dated January 27, 2025, grants the Director General of Sri Lanka Customs the authority to release vehicles imported under the Import and Export Control Act, along with the associated letters of credit.
This move aims to lift the temporary suspension on vehicle imports, allowing vehicles to be released until July 31, 2025. Notably, the ban on private car imports, including those at railway stations, has been lifted. Additionally, used cars up to three years old can now be imported.
The new regulations state that importers registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles can import any number of vehicles, while others may import one vehicle within the next 12 months. Importers who fail to sell their vehicles within 90 days of arrival will be required to either register them in their names or face a 3% fine.
