The activities of the 2024 Parliamentary Election held yesterday (14) had been conducted overall in a peaceful manner, the Election Commission stated.

Voting began at 7 am yesterday in 13,421 polling stations across the country and concluded at 4.00 pm.

According to the 2024 voter list, a total of 17,140,354 voters were eligible in 25 administrative districts coming under 22 electoral constituencies to use their vote to elect the representatives of the 10th Parliament at the Parliamentary Election, the Election Commission said.

The Commissioner General of Elections, Saman Sri Ratnayake said that 2,034 centres were established all over the island to count the votes and about 80,000 election officials have been assigned to count the votes.

After the end of the polling, activities of transporting the ballot boxes from the polling stations to the counting centres took place from 5 pm onwards.

Counting of postal votes commenced from around 4.15 pm, the Elections Commissioner said.

The Elections Commissioner said that the first official voting results are expected to be released by around 10 pm on the day of the election.

The overall percentage of votes cast at the 2024 Parliamentary Election was between 60 to 65 percent, according to the Election Commissioner and the Election Monitors. The percentages of votes declared in each district of the 2024 General Election have been released.

Accordingly, the percentages of votes declared for the respective districts are as follows:

Colombo – 65%, Gampaha -65%, Wanni – 65%, Nuwara Eliya -68%, Kurunegala – 64%, Batticaloa -61%, Digamadulla – 62%, Matara – 64%, Puttalam – 56%, Anuradhapura – 65%, Badulla – 67%, Mannar – 70%, Trincomalee – 67%, Mullaitivu – 63%, Polonnaruwa – 65%, Ratnapura – 65%, Galle – 64%, Jaffna – 69%, Hambantota – 60%, Matale – 67%, Kegalle – 65%, Monaragala – 63%, Vavuniya – 65%, Kilinochchi – 62%, Kandy – 62%, Kalutara – 64%, Ampara – 62%. The Election Commissioner requested all print, broadcasting, and digital media, as well as social media users, to refrain from issuing unofficial election results before the official announcements are made by the Election Commission.

Meanwhile, Police Media Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa said that post-election demonstrations will be banned for a week after the announcement of the 2024 Parliamentary Election results.

DIG Nihal Thalduwa speaking at a special press conference regarding the election post election, said that the election had been conducted peacefully across the island with no violent incidents reported during the entire election time period.

Thalduwa said that 49 people had been arrested during the voting period in connection with violation of election laws of the Parliamentary Election stipulated by the Election Commission.

He said that two incidents each had been reported from Negombo, Kegalle, Seethawakapura, Colombo North, Kalutara, Kelaniya, Theldeniya, Matara and Mullaithivu.

In addition, he said that cases of soliciting bribes, taking photographs, tearing ballot papers and assaults had been reported.

The Police Spokesman said that it is not possible to collectively watch the election results using giant digital screens at any outdoor or indoor locations, and that if such incidents happen, the security forces and police will intervene and disperse the crowds and confiscate the equipment used.
