The Cabinet of Ministers has granted their consent to the joint proposal forwarded by Agriculture and Plantation Industries and Trade, Commerce and Food Security Ministers to import 3,000 metric tonnes of raw ginger over the next three months, Cabinet Spokesman Mass Media Minister Dr.Bandula Gunawardhana said.
He was speaking at the weekly Cabinet media briefing held at the Government Information Department yesterday.
During the Cabinet meeting held on July 15 this year, instructions were given to the Agriculture and Plantation Industries and Trade, Commerce, and Food Security Ministry Secretaries to jointly explore the possibility of reducing the retail price of ginger to a level affordable to consumers in the local market by facilitating the production of ginger.They were also directed to submit a report with appropriate recommendations in this regard.
Cabinet approval has been granted based on the recommendations in the report they submitted.
