Girl stabbed on way to school, man remanded

A schoolgirl who had expressed her unwillingness to continue with an affair she had for about a year was stabbed while she was walking on her way to school causing her injuries. A man was arrested by the Hasalaka Police on suspicion and produced before the Mahiyangana Court and remanded until August 22.

Police said this incident had taken place at about 6.30am yesterday (8) near the Morayaya Sanghabodhi Central College and the schoolgirl who sustained critical injuries had been admitted to the Mahiyangana Base Hospital for treatment.

The 16-year-old schoolgirl is a resident of Morayaya while the 24-year-old man was from Thambuttegama, Police said. It has been revealed, as of now that the reason for the stabbing was because the schoolgirl had said she was unwilling to continue with the affair.

This girl and the suspect youth had built up a friendship about a year ago when by mistake the schoolgirl had dialled the youth’s number. Later it had turned into an affair and they had been talking to each other frequently over the phone. One day the suspect had arrived at his girlfriend’s village Morayaya and to see her. When she saw what he looked like, she had said

she was not in favour of this relationship and that she wanted to end it.

Police said the youth who had got angry over this had been finding fault with the girl and talking to her over the phone for about a month.

The suspect had come from Thambuttegama to Morayaya on August 7 and spent the night at an abandoned house close to the girl’s school. When the girl was on her way to school on August 8 morning, at about 6.30am the youth had stabbed her causing grievous injuries. Villagers who were nearby had come running at that moment and taken steps to admit the girl who was lying on the ground bleeding to the Morayaya Regional Hospital. Since the girl was in a critical condition she had been transferred to the Mahiyangana Base Hospital.

The suspect had been caught by the villagers and tied to a tree, and subsequently handed over to the Police together with the knife he had used to stab the girl. Hospital sources said that when the girl was stabbed the knife had hit her in the chest and waist and that she was now being treated at the Intensive Care Unit.
