GMOA warns Health Minister over political interference in doctor transfers

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has issued a strong warning to Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa over alleged political interference in doctor transfers.

GMOA Assistant Secretary Hansamal Weerasuriya said doctors are not prepared to act under anyone’s orders or submit to politically motivated transfer lists.

“Doctors are not willing to be under anyone’s command. We are not indebted to anyone, nor are we afraid. We have always worked with our heads held high,” he said.

He further stated that doctors are not prepared to bow to political requirements or accept transfer lists prepared to suit political parties.

“We are not ready to bend to political needs. We are also not prepared to accept transfer lists prepared for party requirements,” Weerasuriya said.

He added that doctors are willing to support the health service if their concerns are considered, but warned that treating doctors as subordinates could create serious challenges for the Health Ministry.

“If doctors are treated like subordinates without considering our concerns, the time available for you and the Health Ministry to function smoothly will be limited,” he warned.

The remarks come amid growing tensions between the GMOA and the Health Ministry over recent transfer decisions affecting government doctors. (NewsWire)
