Go beyond Party politics to choose your representative in Parliament – Eran Wickramaratne

At this time of the General Election (GE), we, as citizens, should go beyond Party politics and elect a honest, experienced and educated person to Parliament as an MP. Otherwise, it is not possible to correct the mistakes made by sending unfit people until the next GE, said former MP and Samagi Jana Sadhanaya candidate for the upcoming GE from Colombo District EranWickramaratne.

Addressing a Press conference at the SJB head office on Sunday (3) Wickramaratne said voters had also sent people who were punished by the Courts as being corrupt, murderers and thieves to the last Parliament.

“It is the voters’ responsibility to send good people free from such corruption to Parliament. As in many professions, there are thieves and fraudsters in politics as well, but saying that all 225 MPs are thieves is not true, and false propaganda for political gain by deceiving the public”.

He said that Parliament is the place where Legislations are made for the country and newcomers are not able to come and learn there or to get familiar with it. Therefore, people must give their preference vote to those who have the experience and education without sticking to Party politics alone.

Under representative democracy, MPs who come to govern the country have two main responsibilities. The first is to make Laws, and the second is to have the ability to manage Public Finance.

Some voters aspire through their MP to develop, build a culvert and a bridge in their villages. Provincial Councils and Local Government bodies exist for that purpose. If the people understand that the governance of the country is through Parliament, they won’t make wrong choices, and will not have to blame MPs later,, after having sent them to Parliament,” he added.
