The Fort Police have started an investigation into the theft of a gold chain worth Rs. 1 million from the car of a high-ranking officer of the Colombo Municipal Council, when he went to attend a wedding held at a five star hotel in Colombo Fort.
This officer had attended a party with his wife a few days previously and had removed the gold chain from his neck and left it in the car’s glove compartment.
When he went to attend the wedding, his wife had told him to wear the gold chain and had taken it out of the glove compartment. But he had refused to wear it and had put the chain back in the glove compartment and went into the hotel.
He and his wife got out of the car near the main entrance of the hotel and handed over the car key to a hotel employee asking him to park the car.
After attending the wedding, this officer came with his wife, got into the car and found that the gold chain which was in the glove compartment was missing.
He had taken prompt measures to lodge a complaint with the hotel management. But when the hotel management was going to question the employee who took the car to the car park, they had found him missing.
The Police said that security camera footage shows him leaving the hotel after parking the car.
The Police are looking to arrest him on suspicion of theft.
