Government MPs have no restrictions on speaking to the media, Cabinet Spokesman Health and Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa clarified.
The Minister was responding to a query from a journalist regarding the allegation that the Justice Minister had refused to take part in a media interview saying that he has to get party approval. Dr. Jayatissa further said that there is no restriction on any MP and they can freely express their views to the media. “But we firmly believe that the process should be systematic,” he said. The Minister emphasised that a weekly Cabinet media briefing is held to communicate decisions, during which journalists are free to ask questions.
“We follow a structured approach. I am here to inform the decisions taken at the weekly meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, and Ministers should make the public aware about the matters related to their ministries,” Minister Dr. Jayatissa explained.
“There is no prohibition. If there are any issues, they are related to time constraints, not restrictions,” he added.
