Govt should inform country within next few days on progress of current talks with IMF – Ranil
Former President and United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said that the government should inform the country within the next few days about the progress of the current discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He added that during his Presidency, any significant decisions with the IMF or other matters of importance were transparently communicated to the public.
The former President expressed these views while addressing a rally in Athurugiriya on October 28, held to support the victory of Colombo District candidates contesting under the ‘Gas Cylinder’ symbol of the New Democratic Front.
During his address, Wickremesinghe emphasized the importance of sending this experienced team, represented by the ‘Gas Cylinder’ symbol, to Parliament. He noted that the team, led by former Education Minister and parliamentary veteran Susil Premajayantha, along with UNP representative Sagala Rathnayake, consists of seasoned individuals qualified to manage the Nation’s economic future. He stressed the need for experienced parliamentarians to lead the country forward, particularly concerning economic recovery and sustainable development.
Wickremesinghe reminded voters that when no one was willing to take responsibility for governing the country, he stepped up, while others fled or hid. He said that a capable team, including individuals with economic expertise, was brought together, leading to the normalization of the country’s situation within two years. He highlighted the steps taken in 2022 to engage in a special programme with the IMF, which led to debt sustainability and the completion of the debt restructuring programme.
He explained that, initially, domestic debt restructuring was achieved by 2023, followed by a preliminary agreement on bilateral debt. Wickremesinghe emphasized that 18 creditor countries were involved, with the final steps completed on June 26 of this year.
