Govt. to issue NVQ Certificates for Palmyra, Kithul and Coconut tree tappers and nutcrackers

According to the Palmyra Development Board, approval has been given to give a National Vocational Qualification -3 to those who are involved in tapping Palmyra, Kithul and coconut trees and plucking nuts in Sri Lanka after two weeks of training.

Dr. Krishantha Pathiraja, Chairman of the Palmyra Development Board, said that steps will be taken to give a National Vocational Qualification -3 (NVQ-3) level certificate given by the National Apprenticeship Board to every person who works in Palmyra, Kithul and coconut tree tapping and nut plucking in Sri Lanka.

A discussion was held at the Ministry of Agriculture and Plantation Industries yesterday afternoon (05) regarding the measures taken for the welfare of people working in the fields of Palmyra, Kithul and coconut.

In this discussion chaired by the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, the Minister informed the chairmen of the Palmyra, Kithul and Coconut Development Boards that they should put in place an effective programme to protect the lives of the people involved in the tapping of Palmyra, Kithul and coconut trees as well as the extraction of nuts.

Dr. Krishantha Pathiraja, Chairman of the Palmyra Development Board, who commented accordingly, informed that arrangements have been made to provide an NVQ-3 level certificate and two-week training for the safety and welfare of those people.

Under the relevant training, training is given on measures to be taken to prevent sudden illnesses, snake bites and falling from trees while climbing such trees.

Also, it has been planned to provide concessional loan scheme to assistance of Rs.05 lacks to every people tapping Palmyra, Kithul and Coconut.

In addition to this, attention has also been paid to creating a system of providing insurance to people engaged in activities such as tapping palmyra, Kithul and coconut trees and plucking nuts. In this regard, the Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board is proposed to prepare the new insurance scheme.

Commenting on this, the minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera advised that in cases where many people engaged in these activities lost their lives due to accidents and were completely disabled, the normal living conditions of those families would be completely destroyed and he advised to implement this work order to reduce these conditions. .
