Grandfather who made minor girl drunk gets bail

The Kekirawa District Judge and Magistrate Senarath Bandara ordered that the suspect grandfather, who was arrested by the Kekirawa  Police and brought to court in connection with the incident of allegedly brutalizing his 14-year-old granddaughter after giving her alcohol, to be released on two surety bonds worth Rs. 200,000 each. The magistrate ordered the suspect to appear before the court again on October 16.

Senior lawyer Vijitha Wickramanayake who appeared for the suspect, said that he strongly denies the accusations levelled by the police against his client when the suspect was presented to the court on the charges of brutalizing a minor girl after getting her drunk with alcohol. The suspect is a resident of Kekirawa Unagolleva Pahalagama named E.G. Piyasena.

The 14-year-old girl had come to school after drinking alcohol in the morning when she was taken into police custody by two police officers who were on traffic duty in front of the school where she is studying.

Later, the two police officers had taken steps to present the student to the Kekirawa Police OIC, Chief Inspector Sumith Munasinghe.

On the instructions of the Station Commander, the Child and Women’s Bureau interrogated the girl at length. During those interrogations, the police were able to discover that the girl’s mother’s second husband’s father had given her alcohol.

Later, the girl was admitted to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital. After that, based on the statements of the girl, preliminary investigations were conducted and the suspect was arrested and presented to the court.
