HelpAge distributes water tanks, dry rations to drought victims

HelpAge Sri Lanka (HASL) recently distributed water tanks and dry rations worth over Rs. 16 million to over 900 underprivileged families living in Mahaoya, Dehiattakandiya and Pothuwil in Ampara District and Delft, Kytes and Chunnakam in Jaffna Distict.

HelpAge, Sri Lanka’s one of the oldest social service organisations also provides free cataract surgeries for underprivileged senior citizens.

Accordingly, HASL distributed sixty (2,000 litre capacity) water tanks and 1,500 ten litre water cans and 900 dry ration packs to needy families living in Ampara and Jaffna districts.

The recipients received a dry ration pack including rice, dhal, sugar, wheat flour, tea leaves, chillies, canned fish, milk powder and spice. In addition, recipients also received soap, toothpaste, towels, mosquito nets and mats.

The distribution was carried out under the guidance of respective District Divisional Secretariat offices.

HASL Executive Director Samantha Liyanawaduge said such water tanks and dry ration distributions will be carried out even in other vulnerable areas in the future and thanked the Global Emergency Fund of HelpAge International for this drought relief project.

HASL, Head of Programme Chaminda de Silva extended gratitude to the Divisional Secretaries and Grama Niladaris in respective areas for the assistance given towards the goods distribution.
