Holy Family Convent (HFC) Kurunegala once again showed their prowess to win the overall championship in all four age groups under 13 ,15,17 and under 19 at the Milo All Island Schools Netball Championship concluded at Albert F Pieris Stadium, Wennappuwa yesterday.
It was a very good team effort by Kurunegala HFC coached by Amalka Gunatilleka who was recently appointed as the National Junior Netball coach. In fact HFC Kurunegala took part in all age categories and they were able to enter the finals and won the titles in grand style and this was the 13th time HFC won this event and it was a tremendous effort by the Familians said HFC Kurunegala Deputy Principal Rev Sister Timali Lowe. She said it was a great honour for the school. Coach Amalka Gunatilleke and trainer Ananda Wannitilleka put in a fine effort to build a strong team and the players showed their ability by defeating all the schools. We always back our players and their dedication and commitment is very high and should repeat this performance in the future said Rev Sister Timali Lowe.
HFC Kurunegala defeated Kalutara Balika in the under 19 final 27/13 to take the title without much effort and Tania Gunasekera of HFC received the under 19 Best Player award from the Chief Guest Education Minister Susil Premajayantha.
Familians Kurunegala defeated Maliyadeva Balika 32/24 to take the under 17 title. Akithma Linduli Abeysinghe the elder sister of twins won the under 17 best player award for the third consecutive time.
In the under 15 final, HFC Kurunegala defeated Sri Devananda Ambalangoda to win the title 28/10 with Nethuni Divyanjana of HFC winning the under 15 Best Player award. In the under 13 tournament HFC Kurunegala beat Maliyadeva Balika 9/6 to win the title.
The B division under 19 title was won by Gattuwana Mahinda MV defeating Katapathwehera MV Kurunegala while Yeshani Vinodya of the champion team won the Best Player award .The B division under 17 title was won by Sujatha Balika Matale defeating Mahinda MV Gettuwana and the Best Player award was won by champion team’s Kavindu Amarasinghe.
The B division under 13 title was won by Buwanekapura MMV Maharagama defeating Padeniya Sirinanda MV. Tharushi Methmini won the Best Player award.
The chief guest Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said this was a very successful tournament conducted by the Education Ministry with the support of Nestle Lanka. Milo tournaments made good pathways to find talented players said the Education Minister. Milo MD Jason Avensana, Nestle Lanka Vice Presidents Bandula Egodage and Ruwan Welikala were also present.
