The Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industry, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera said that the highest poultry meat production ever recorded in our country has been reported in 2024. Accordingly, it has been possible to increase the production of chicken meat in this country to 269 million kilograms in 2024.

On average, the annual consumption of chicken meat in this country is 230 million kg. Also, the annual production of chicken meat in this country was up to 220-230 million kilograms. This situation declined rapidly during the last covid 19 pandemic, economic crises and chemical fertilizer crisis.

But by now, raising the overall capacity of all chicken farms, giving maize import licenses for animal feed production only to animal farms and animal feed production companies, as well as the increase of 220,000 metric tons of maize production in Sri Lanka last year, led to an increase in chicken meat production and egg production.

By now, it has been possible to completely stop the import of eggs from India. At present, the people of our country are consuming eggs produced in our country. Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industry, also mentioned that the price of eggs is at the limit of 50 rupees due to the increase in the demand for eggs, but there are enough eggs in the market for the country’s daily consumption.

The first few villages of the Youth Agri-Entrepreneurship Village Program implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Plantation Industries started in Kegalle District yesterday (04). The Minister made these comments while participating in the commencement of the work of the villages of Pahala Lenagala, Halloluwa and Mapitigama as Youth Agricultural Entrepreneurship Villages.

Minister of State for Livestock Development Mr.D.B. Herath, Members of Parliament Mrs.Rajika Wickramasinghe, Udayakantha Gunathilake and Sudath Manjula also participated.

Currently, the daily consumption of eggs in Sri Lanka has increased by 15 percent. Although the daily consumption of eggs used to be 07 million eggs, the amount has now increased to 8.5 million eggs.

The Department of Animal Production and Health has stated that the consumption of eggs has increased due to the development of the tourism industry, the rise in fish prices and the public’s awareness of the nutritional value of eggs.

The minister who expressed his views here-

Yesterday I discussed with poultry producers and egg producers. This year has recorded the highest production of chicken meat in the history of our country. That amount is 269 million kilograms. We have never produced this much chicken meat in our country before. That is why it has been possible to keep the price of chicken meat at the level of 1000 rupees, which had risen to 1700 rupees.

Today, egg manufacturers are making huge profits. So I talked to them to reduce the prices a little more. And now the people of our country are consuming eggs produced in our country. Now eggs are not imported from India. The Minister also mentioned that our goal is to further increase the production of chicken meat and eggs in this country.
