In the investigations conducted by the Department of Animal Production and Health regarding the sudden death of pigs in several areas of the Gampaha district, it has been revealed that the cause is ‘Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome’ – a disease which originated in Africa and is now spreading among pigs in several South Asian countries.
The Department said that this has been confirmed in several examined samples obtained from the affected pigs.
This is the first time that the disease has been reported in Sri Lanka and the Department states that the veterinary officers of the respective areas have been delegated authority to prevent the spread of this highly pathogenic disease to other parts of the country.
According to the Agriculture and Livestock Ministry, the approval of the regional health authorities has been made mandatory to transport pork between regional secretariats and steps have been taken to issue the relevant gazette notice in this regard.
