Homagama, a central educational city should be free from drugs and violence

A special discussion on the security issues of Pitipana and Homagama and surrounding areas including NSBM Green University and maintaining the area as a drug and violence free zone was held at NSBM Green University Auditorium under the patronage of Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon, yesterday.

Various problems related to the security of the area and maintaining it as a peaceful area and many ideas as well as proposals of the local residents were presented. Also, the IGP and other guests explained the facts about the measures that can be taken to solve some of the existing problems and how to act as a community.

The Minister who spoke on this occasion said: “In case of a victory, there is a large group of fathers, but when a problem arises, no one comes forward to take it over. A few decades ago, Homagama and its surrounding areas were in a situation where residents had to travel to Colombo for all their needs. No one from the city came to the village. In order to change that history, we implemented a programme according to a different concept. An economic centre that was limited to Colombo was established for the first time in Meegoda. Pitipana Mahinda Rajapaksa College was established as the largest secondary school in Asia for the children who sought popular schools in Colombo. A new turning point in education was established by introducing the Technology stream.

“Today, NSBM University has become an exemplary green university operating under 100 percent public sector. Cabinet approval has been received for the establishment of a medical faculty.

“Accordingly, the Homagama area will become a place where doctors will be created in the future.

“Sri Lanka’s only sports university is to be built in Diyagama. With all this, Homagama has become a unique educational centre in the country. Based on this situation, with hundreds of thousands of students coming to obtain education, many people have had sources of income for them. Due to this, we have to prepare the necessary environment and background for anyone from any part of the country to come to this electorate without fear and doubt. Children from different parts of the country are directed to this university with great hope of securing their future.

“If the lives of these young people are destroyed by falling victim to various immoralities including drugs, we as local residents also have a part of the responsibility. Homagama, which was a central educational city, should be a peaceful region free from drugs and violence.

Therefore, it is essential for parents to be focused on it as adults. Giving special attention to that, approval has also been received for the establishment of a special police station in this area.

“The police also have to play a big role in the security of this area. For that, the support of all the local residents should be given. In order to do all this, the people themselves should be self-disciplined. Through that, the region, the village as well as the country can fulfill a great national mission.”
