The Health Ministry has taken steps to build a peripheral hospital at Somawathiya Raja Maha Viharaya premises.
A special discussion related to that was held recently at Somawathiya Raja Maha Viharaya under the patronage of Chief Incumbent of the Somawathiya Raja Maha Viharaya Ven. Pahamune Sri Sumangala Thera.
According to the Chief Incumbent, around 1,000 devotees come to worship at Somawathi Temple daily, and that number exceeds 50,000 on Poya days, and over 100,000 devotees come to worship at the temple on Poson and Esala Poya days. If a devotee falls sick suddenly, he or she has to be taken to Polonnaruwa Hospital.
As per the instructions of the Health Ministry, two ambulances from the Polonnaruwa General Hospital have been deployed at the temple and they are currently operating from the temple grounds to transport sick devotees to the Polonnaruwa General Hospital. The new hospital proposed to be established at the temple premises would be a big relief for people living in the nearby villages of Sungawila, Katuwanwala, Galkanda and Kandakadu.
Health Secretary Dr. Palitha Mahipala said that this new hospital will be built with an outpatient department, an emergency treatment unit, two female and male wards, as well as residential facilities for doctors and general health staff.
This new hospital will be affiliated to the Polonnaruwa General Hospital, and steps will be taken to assign the health staff led by doctors and nurses from Polonnaruwa Hospital. A special Cabinet paper will be presented and approval will be given to build this new hospital, and Rs.100 million will be allocated for it this year.
