Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana said that Sri Lanka Government signed a number of short-term and long-term international agreements to save this country and free it from debt and become a developed and rich country.

The Minister said that the first of these is the four-year loan agreement with the International Monetary Fund, and if the agreement is changed, the Sri Lankan Government will not be able to prepare the budget.

The Minister said that the reason for this is that nearly two billion US dollars in budget financing support will be provided for the preparation of the budget for the years 2025, 2026 and 2027 only if the IMF agreement is maintained.

The Minister made these comments while attending a meeting of the activists of Kesbewa Constituency held in Piliyandala under the theme ‘Let’s Win the 2024 Presidential Election Together’.

The Minister further said, “If the Government does not act according to the joint aid group for the payment of the foreign debt and the repayment of the debt with China and other bilateral creditors, there will be lawsuits against Sri Lanka in the Courts around the world. In accordance with these international agreements, the Parliament of Sri Lanka has passed five major Acts. That is, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka Act, which prohibits money laundering, the Public Debt Management Act, which prevents the Government from borrowing as it sees fit, the Public Finance Management Act, which prevents budgeting with populist political promises, the Economic Transformation Act, which specifies the course of the national policy that will build the country, and the Anti-corruption Act to prevent fraud and corruption.

Therefore, Ranil Wickremesinghe is the only Presidential candidate who will come to the Presidential election this year after legislating a very clear and specific programme to build the country. So for any candidate who makes election promises like delusional and fraudulent fairy tales politics can be done, but the country cannot be governed. Therefore, if Sri Lanka deviates from the signed international agreements, it will be impossible to prevent the country from falling into a terrible abyss that cannot be recovered for decades to come.

Our country can be prevented from becoming a country like Greece, Venezuela, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, Ghana and Costa Rica only by voting for the Gas Cylinder.

The majority of the UNP, SLFP, MEP and SLPP this time are supporting the Independent candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe without presenting candidates from their own parties, to ensure a win for the country. This is not the time for experiments that will help the destruction of the country. This time it should be Ranil,” he said.

The meeting chaired by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena was attended by many speakers including Minister Susil Premajayantha, MP Madhura Withanage and President’s Trade Union Director General Saman Ratnapriya.
