Improved software to security camera surveillance system to detect traffic offenders

The Sri Lanka Police have launched a new software system aimed at improving the enforcement of traffic laws by integrating the security camera surveillance system in Colombo with police stations and the Central Criminal Investigation Department (CCID). This initiative will enable the authorities to easily identify and take action against traffic violators using advanced technology.

A senior police official explained that the initiative is part of a broader effort to empower the police with technology. As part of this, the software will link the Motor Traffic Department data system with the police, allowing officers to instantly access all registered details of a vehicle involved in a traffic violation.

When a vehicle is caught violating road rules by the security camera system, the software will immediately identify the vehicle’s registration number. Authorities will then trace the owner of the vehicle and send photographic evidence of the violation to the local police station for enforcement action.

The official also mentioned that in cases where the registered owner no longer possesses the vehicle, a procedure will be followed to address the matter accordingly.
