India awards 20 cultural centres to Sabaragamuwa

On the occasion of the 78th anniversary of India’s independence from Britain, the Government of India has awarded 20 cultural centres to the two districts of Sabaragamuwa.

Accordingly, on the request of Sabaragamuwa Province Governor Navin Dissanayake, the Government of India has taken steps to establish these 20 cultural centres in the Kegalle and Ratnapura districts. The first of these centres named ‘India Corner’ was opened at Ratnapura Central Library premises with the participation of Governor Dissanayake and Indian Assistant High Commissioner Dr. S. Athira recently (9).

School and university students, scholars, language learners and the general public are provided facilities to use these India Corners. Accordingly, books covering many fields including Indian culture, Hindi and English language studies have been added to these.

The Indian Government has planned to provide e-library facilities to India Corners in the future.

After this programme Indian Assistance High Commissioner Dr. S. Athira visited the historic Sabaragamuwa Maha Saman Devalaya in Ratnapura and invoked blessings.
