Individual nabbed with smuggled cigarettes

The Panadura South Police said that an individual was taken into custody yesterday (February 2) together with 11,200 cigarettes, which had been brought in without duty payment.

The police said the value of the fags taken into custody thus was more than Rs. 1.1 million. The person who was arrested was a 32-year-old individual, a resident of Eluwila, Panadura.

The team of police officers raided a sales outlet based on a tip-off received and subsequent to an inspection being carried out 11,200 cigarettes in 59 bundles were discovered. The suspect was scheduled to be produced before the Panadura Magistrate’s Court.

The raid was carried out under the leadership of Chief Inspector of Police Channa Amarasekera by Sergeants Perera (56907), Priyadarshani (2636), and Constables Dhammika (62378), Kumara (76256) and Muthubandara (28433), under the direction of Headquarters Inspector of Police Upul Priyankara Nawulla based on the instructions of Senior Superintendent of Police Samantha Wedage and Assistant Superintendent of Police Nishantha Senaratne.
