A programme in Industrial Entrepreneurship (IE) for Sri Lanka’s undergraduates was recently started at the University of Ruhuna (UoR).

With the aim of building an entrepreneurial culture for an export-oriented production economy in the country, the Ministry of Industry and the IDB have started this IE programme for undergraduates. As a result, UoR students embarked on a field trip to gain hands-on IE at the Katubedda Industrial Development Board (IDB), where they were provided with guidance and knowledge on IE and how to work for it in practice.

IDB Chairman Dr. Saranga Alahapperuma said the IDB has been entrusted with the responsibility of promoting the culture of entrepreneurship, centred on the school and university systems.

Accordingly, it is planned to implement this IE programme so that all the universities of the country are represented.

The initial steps of the’ IE Workshop for university students have been started at the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness of the UoR with the participation of new university students.

“This strategic partnership is a collective effort to nurture entrepreneurial skills and align educational curricula with real-world industry needs,” said Dr. Alahapperuma. “The IDB is totally committed to strengthen this country through its economy, manufacturing, industry and entrepreneurship, and thus, empowering students with practical experience and fostering the entrepreneurial culture. This initiative will create sustainable growth and prosperity in the Industrial sector of Sri Lanka,” he said.
