International language education should be expanded throughout the country – Dr. Gunawardhana
Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister, Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana said that International language education should be expanded throughout the country while handing over the newly built outdoor theatre of Homagama, Godagama Subharathi Mahamathya Vidyalaya to the students.

Minister Bandula further said:
“Subharathi Mahamathya Vidyalaya is one of the best model schools in the area. Especially with the guidance and financial support of Pradeep Yasaratne, the Chief Secretary of the Western Province, and the interest of the teaching staff including the Principal, one of the best primary sections in the Homagama region is established in Subharathi Vidyalaya. Smart digital classrooms in this college can be used as an example for any school in the country.
The exam-centred education system that existed in our country for a long time will be transformed into a student-centred education system under the new national education policy from the year 2024.
A new education policy will be implemented in the year 2024, where evaluations will be made for extracurricular activities inside and outside the classroom, and which will produce citizens with good personality and who can be a resource for the universe.
More space is given to the aesthetic aspects such as dance, music, painting, drama, theatre arts which add new value to the lives of these small schoolchildren. Paying special attention to that, today the new outdoor theatre of this college will be opened for the children. Through this, children with talents, skills and creative abilities will get special support to further develop their innate talents.
The truth that all teachers here must accept is that world education is changing seriously and rapidly. Education and economic activities are undergoing a major transformation, especially through the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Countries with a small economy like ours need to further develop children’s learning of foreign languages including English.
Most of the children of Subharathi Vidyalaya who pass the scholarship examination with excellent skills go to Homagama Mahinda Rajapaksa Vidyalaya for secondary education. It is the largest secondary mixed school in Asia.
All the students of the college who appeared for the GCE Ordinary Level examination have been able to show a result of 100 percent, qualifying for the GCE Advanced Level examination. Among them, the excellence shown in foreign languages is also special.
It is clearly evident, children and teachers in Homagama rural areas have proven that they can study not only English but also any international language like French, Japanese, Korean and Hindi and many more.
Next year, Russian and Chinese languages will also be taught in this school. In my opinion, the children of Subharathi Vidyalaya should also be given the opportunity to learn other foreign languages apart from English.” At the invitation of Saman Manjula, the Principal of the college, Western Province Chief Secretary Pradeep Yasaratne, Education Secretary and other officials, college teaching staff, students, parents and a large number of people attended this event.
