Intrepid targets over 15,000 Australian tourists to SL by 2030

The Chairman and Co-Founder Intrepid, Darrell Wade of the world’s largest adventure travel company and a leader in responsible tourism made a special visit to Sri Lanka to highlight the need for sustainable growth and the importance of Sri Lanka to Intrepid’s 2030 strategy.

In 2024, its business in Sri Lanka is growing at a rate of over 375% and Intrepid Colombo is expected to carry over 4,500 customers. This figure surpasses the Destination Management Company’s (DMC’s) best year back in pre-covid 2019 (3,500 customers) and the operation has ambitious plans to bring over 15,000 customers to Sri Lanka by 2030 said Poornaka Delpachitra, Country General Manager, Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile it was disclosed that the global summit of Intrepid which is held in Melbourne every year will be held in Sri Lanka with the participation of 200 delegates in 2025. Intrepid Colombo currently employs over 240 staff and 30 local trip leaders, being one of the largest offices for Intrepid. Intrepid operates 11 trips across the country. In 2023, it supported 1,200 travellers to explore Sri Lanka in a conscious manner.

Wade highlighted the need for sustainable growth and the importance of Sri Lanka to Intrepid’s 2030 strategy. Beyond Sri Lanka, the 2030 Strategy involves a global ambition to double its global customers to 600,000 (320,000 in 2023). Achieve revenues of $1.3bn (AUD $621M in 2023) and contribute 1% of revenue to purpose initiatives. It plans to deepen its vertical integration to expand into areas including accommodation and growits presence in key countries, including Sri Lanka.
