Senior Meterologist Janaka Kumara yesterday said that the tornado-like incident that occurred in the sea near the Bambalapitiya Railway Station on Friday (22) is a waterspout.
The roof of the Bambalapitiya railway station was blown off of the due to gusty winds accompanied with heavy rains.
Kumara further said that a tornado happens if the waterspout moves onshore.”A waterspout lifts up the fish in a reservoir or the sea and such conditions lead to fish rains. In the event of a tornado on land, if a human goes to that place, the tornado can lift that person up,” he said.
He added that tornado conditions are more likely to occur during the inter-monsoon.”We are about to face an inter-monsoon in the future. Also, tornadoes can occur due to wind-gathering conditions; however, tornado conditions are relatively less in our country.
Janaka Kumara also said that an increase in the current rain conditions in the Southwest region and an increase in the wind conditions in the sea area is expected after tomorrow (26), and he added that the cyclone conditions in the Pacific Ocean will affect this.
