Kathiravelu Shanmugam Kugathasan of the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (ITAK) was sworn in as a Member of Parliament yesterday (9).
He took his oaths before Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena soon after the Parliament proceedings commenced.
Following the oath affirmation before the Speaker, the MP signed the Member Roll kept before the Secretary General of Parliament Kushani Rohanadeera.
Kugathasan was appointed to fill the vacancy created by the demise of ITAK leader Rajavarothiam Sampanthan, who was also a former opposition leader.
Kugathasan completed his higher education from the University of Colombo and Madurai Kamaraj University, India.
He has been a member of the ITAK since 1975 and has been working as the Trincomalee District leader of the party since 2018. He has also worked as the Eastern Province Development Affairs Coordinator under the Ministry of National Policy, Economic Affairs and Resettlement.
In the previous Parliamentary election, he contested as an ITAK candidate for the Trincomalee district.
The Elections Commission published the gazette notification No. 2391/14 regarding the appointment of Kathiravelu Shanmugam Kugathasan on July 2, 2024.
