Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana yesterday said that the subject ministry has no authority to reduce bus fares.
The Minister said this at the Cabinet media conference held yesterday (2) at the Government Information Department.
The Minister said Parliament has appointed the National Transport Commission (NTC) and the Commission has a chairman and a board of directors.
The Minister further said that the National Transport Commission has prepared a formula for bus fares. According to that formula, the only thing the Minister can do is to arrange the bus fare and get approval.
Therefore, it is important for the public to know the implementing agency when these matters are explained to them, so the Government Information Department continues to hold such a series of discussions under the Information Department Director General on such important matters.
