Colombo Additional Magistrate Tharanga Mahawatte yesterday ordered to further remand the Inter-University Students’ Federation (IUSF) Convener Wasantha Mudalige until today (December 13), when he was produced before the Court yesterday.
He was remanded until further advice is received by the Attorney General.He was produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court yesterday by prison officials.
Mudalige was arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and held under detention orders for 89 days before been produced in Court on November 17.
Senior Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Piries appearing on behalf of the Terrorism Investigation Division informed the Magistrate that more than half of the investigations have been concluded pertaining to the incident.
“Nine statements have been recorded from the suspect as well”, he added. SDSG Piries further said that since the investigation has not been completed, he cannot make submssions regarding the Attorney General’s instructions regarding the suspect.
President’s Counsel Saliya Piries appearing on behalf of the suspect stated that the investigations so far have not revealed any offenses under the provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism Act. He further added that it appears that the government is deliberately delaying the investigations pertaining to this suspect. He also pointed out that the Supreme Court has mentioned in a judgement that the court should not act according to the requests made by the investigating officers and the court should not be a rubber stamp for them.
