Jaffna Teaching Hospital volunteer workers seek permanency

Attention of the Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa was focused on problems of volunteer workers who have worked at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital for more than three years.

A group of representatives of the junior volunteer workers engaged in service at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital for a period of more than three years, arrived at the Health Ministry on Tuesday (26), without any prior notice to meet the minister in order to present to him, problems they have been facing.

The group met the minister and engaged in discussions. On this occasion they pointed out that since several years ago they have been providing volunteer services in relation to junior health staff duties at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital. They requested the Minister to make their posts permanent.

The Health Minister, who paid attention to the above facts, held an initial discussion with them and later came outside the Health Ministry to meet the other volunteer workers who were there. He held a discussion with them as well and focused his attention on their problems too.

Subsequently, expressing his views to the media, the minister said that a group of young people who were providing their services voluntarily at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital had come from Jaffna to Colombo with the hope of meeting him and discussing their professional problems, in expectation of solutions for them and that he engaged in lengthy discussions with them all.

The minister said that this group of volunteer workers had served at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital for a period of more than three years and that it was revealed that significantly, hospital services were being maintained because of them.

Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa also said that he held a discussion with the Acting Secretary to the Health Ministry and Mass Media, Wathsala Priyadharshani and Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena and other officials regarding the problem of the volunteer workers and that he will expedite looking into the possibility of how justice can be done to these persons.
