Jaffna Uni. Professor attempts suicide

A Professor at a Jaffna University had tried to commit suicide recently as he lost the opportunity to function in the Acting Head of the Department post.

When a Head of the Department (HOD) of a Faculty in the University had applied for sabbatical leave, Jaffna University Vice Chancellor Professor S.Srisatkunarajah was appointed Acting Head of the Department after informing the Senate.

However, the Head of the Department who applied for the Sabbatical leave had later informed the VC that his foreign trip will be delayed and he wants to postpone taking sabbatical leave and requested to come back and function in his Department. Then VC had approved his request.

“After hearing about this, the Professor who was appointed as Acting HOD has come to the VC’s office while a meeting was going on and poured kerosene on his head and attempted to suicide as he lost the opportunity to function as the Acting HOD. However, the VC had talked to him more than one and half hours and pacified the Professor and sent him home,” sources said.
