On the opening day of the All Island School Games at the Sugathadasa Stadium, Jayavi Ranhinda Alwis from Royal College Panadura achieved a remarkable feat by establishing a new meet record in the Under-20 Boys Shot Put final.
Alwis showcased his strength and skill by throwing the shot put a distance of 16.64 meters, securing the gold medal. He not only clinched the gold but also had a substantial lead of nearly three meters over the silver medalist, SN Bandara from Ananda National School in the North Western Province, who recorded a distance of 13.87 meters.
The bronze medal was claimed by Theva Mathumiyahan of St Joseph’s College in the Eastern Province, with a throw of 13.46 meters.
The opening day of the All Island School Games featured a total of eight finals. The event began with the lighting of the Olympic Light, a symbol of sportsmanship, by Asian Games 800m gold medalist Tharushi Karunaratne and Commonwealth Youth Games 400m hurdles silver medalist Ayomal Akalanka from Ambagamuwa Central College.
This record-setting performance by Alwis marks an exciting start to the five-day sporting extravaganza, celebrating the talent and dedication of young athletes from across the island representing all provinces.
