Sri Lanka is on a mission to revamp its State-owned enterprises, including the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) under the IMF Programme, while the country is committed to achieving the Government’s target of 70 percent share of renewable energy in power generation by 2030.
Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has been supporting Power Sector Reform Secretariat (PSRS) since August 2023 to assist the reform and their efforts to attain the 70 percent renewables in 2030. From the beginning, PSRS has been working on the planning and execution of restructuring the power sector.
To further energise this transformation, JICA has agreed with the Power and Energy Ministry (MPE) to dispatch Japanese experts to improve the capacity of power system operation and planning. The experts will consider the countermeasures utilising Japanese technology and knowledge against the instability of electricity supply caused by the large-scale introduction of renewable energy in collaborate with National System Operator, which will take over such function from the CEB.
An agreement on this cooperation was signed between Ministry Secretary Dr. Sulakshana Jayawardena and Chief Representative of JICA Sri Lanka Office Yamada Tetsuya on Wednesday (11) at the MPE. Yamada noted that JICA and the Japanese people would continue to support Sri Lanka to achieve its renewable energy targets and transform the power sector, so that the people of Sri Lanka could benefit its positive outcomes.
