JVP MC member remanded for buying stolen tiles

Three persons including a JVP Boralasgamuwa Municipal Council member, a NPP candidate at the upcoming election have been arrested on suspicion by the Boralasgamuwa Police regarding the theft of 400 tiles from a house under construction of a businessman.

The member was remanded till February 16 by the Gangodawila Magistrate’s court. Boralasgamuwa Police said the JVP Municipal Council member has been arrested for having stolen goods in his possession.The theft took place in January. The businessman who is the owner of the house under construction in Jaya Mawatha, Bellanwila has filed a complaint with the police on February1.

An extensive investigation by the police has revealed that the theft was committed by a drug addict living in Jaya Mawatha and his friend.

The police arrested the drug addict on February 3 and during questioning, it was revealed that he had sold the stolen tiles to various people at a low price.

Police said the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna council member is also in the group who bought tiles from this drug addict at a low price. Police said around 50 tiles have been purchased by him. The police say that everyone who bought the tiles from this drug addict, including this councillor, knew that they were stolen goods, so he and another person who bought 80 tiles were arrested on Saturday (4).

Several others are to be arrested for possessing stolen goods.
