Kalutara train accident probed for foul play

0 0

A train accident near the Katukurunda Railway Station in Kalutara claimed the lives of three individuals, including a toddler, on Saturday (12), at around 7:00 pm.

Among the victims was a two-year-old child, whose death has sparked suspicions of foul play, leading to an in-depth probe. The child’s passing away under suspicious circumstances has become the central focus of the inquiry, as authorities probe whether it may have been more than just a tragic accident. The train, travelling from Beliatta to Maradana, hit all three victims on the coastal line.

Kalutara Nagoda Teaching Hospital’s Coroner S.A. Kumasaru directed the Kalutara South Police to refer the investigation to the Kalutara Chief Magistrate’s Court yesterday (13).

The victims have been identified as Tharusha Hasitha (21) and his two-year-old son Sanul Methish, both residents of Rajawatta, Kalutara, along with Tharusha’s friend Roshan Janaka (47), from Weniwelkatiya.

The investigation was launched due to suspicions that the child might have been thrown by his father, leading to the inquiry being referred to the Kalutara Chief Magistrate’s Court. Meanwhile, the inquest for the other two victims was conducted before Kalutara District Coroner Nirosha Dil Rukshini. The testimony of the train driver, who witnessed the accident, has been postponed. The post-mortem examination was conducted by Judicial Medical Officer N.L.L. Jayasinghe at Kalutara Nagoda Teaching Hospital.
