Kamindu has everything a batter needs, says Mathews
Kamindu Mendis became the fastest batter to score 1000 Test runs in 75 years, as he hit an unbeaten 182 in Sri Lanka’s first innings against New Zealand in Galle International Cricket Stadium where his home grounds and it was incredible back to back centuries in two tests. Having got there in 13 innings, Kamindu equalled Don Bradman’s place. The two of them are now third-equal fastest in Test history, with only Herbert Sutcliffe (England )and Everton Weekes (West Indies) having achieved the feat in fewer innings (both 12).
The stylish left hander promoted to bat at number five really played well to maintain his continuous performance.
He has been in excellent form this year and was also Sri Lanka’s highest run-scorer in their last two series against Bangladesh and England and this New Zealand test series once again he scored back to back centuries.
Angelo Mathews highly praised about Kamindu’s achievement after his epic knock of unbeaten 182.
Kamindu Mendis has just taken off. Hasn’t he ? He has been unbelievable over the eight games that he has played said Sri Lanka’ s most experienced player of the team Angelo Mathews.
“So happy one of our own is breaking all the records. This unbelievable player has got the skill. He’s got the temperament, he’s got the courage, he’ s got everything that a batter and cricketer needs,” added Mathews.
Mathews further said Kamindu’s maturity also has been great. Non of us were able to do the kinds of things he’s doing at that point in our careers. Surely one of the best batters I have seen in recent years, added Mathews .
Actually our all the players responded brilliantly. The Selectors and coach Jayasuriya were tempted to bring Kamindu up the batting order from number 7 to number 5. He is a good player and deserved to get that position. Kusal Mendis for number seven and keep the wickets and Chandimal for number three batter. When the player keep the wicket very difficult to bat as opener or number three, Chandimal also responded very well to bat at number three and these changes are well executed.
“We as senior players always share our experience with other players. Especially how to handle the situation. To a player like Kamindu it is very easy to explain this as he is very mature player and very dedicated. As this moment as seniors we have to share our experience with them and it is very important,” said Mathews.
