Defending champions Kandy Sports Club kept their unbeaten record intact with a hard fought win over Havelock Sports Club -the only other contender for the ongoing Nippon Paint league title last week. Unbeaten Kandy SC has won the league championship consecutively six times since 2015.
The defending champions, Kandy Sports Club, retained the top spot last week after edging out Havelocks Sports Club in a closely fought out contest by 22-15 at Nittawela. Kandy was leading 5-3 at halftime, but a much fierce second half saw them clinching the match by 22 points to 15. With this win Kandy remained unbeaten and top the points table, while Havies suffered their first defeat for the season and were placed second.
CH in third place
Meanwhile, CH and FC secured a fighting third place in the league after winning their last four games on the trot. It was not the ideal start for CH, but after losing their first three games against Kandy SC, CR & FC and Havelock SC, the lads from Maitland Crescent came back storming to register four successive wins on the trot over Navy SC, Air Force SC, Army SC and Police SC.
Police in fourth position
Police came into the fourth position in the last week, after their bonus-point win over Army SC. The Police team, a superior brand of play, will be the team to watch in the Super Round.
Air Force (5th), Navy (6th), Army SC (7th)
Finally Air Force SC finished fifth, Navy SC on sixth and Army SC on seventh, after creating some surprise victories in the end. They were robbed of a win against defending champs Kandy SC by the unexpected weather conditions, where they lost the match by a whisker 21-17 in the end.
CR & FC placed last
CR & FC started the ongoing league tournament in high fashion, but soon faded away from contention after some thumping losses against Kandy SC 26-45 and Havelock SC 03-53. The present CR team played the ongoing league tournament like armatures, finally losing five out of their seven matches respectively to be placed last at eighth position for the first time in CR’s rugby history.
