Accordingly, in addition to Colombo and Kandy National Hospitals, Karapitiya Teaching Hospital will also be grouped as a National Hospital, he said.
Karapitiya Teaching Hospital operates as the main tertiary health centre that provides tertiary services except maternal treatment services to patients in the Southern Province and adjacent provinces, and the primary and secondary healthcare institutions in those provinces refer patients to this hospital for specialist services, the Cabinet spokesman said.
The Professors’ unit at Karapitiya Teaching Hospital has been established for the teaching activities of Ruhuna University’s Faculty of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences Faculty and accordingly, this hospital provides teaching and training facilities to approximately 1,100 undergraduate medical students of Ruhuna University, approximately 500 nursing students of Galle Nursing Training School and approximately about 100 physiotherapists, pharmacists and laboratory technicians annually, the Minister said.
He said that by the end of this year, the hospital’s bed capacity will be increased to 2,858 and therefore, it will become the tertiary care health centre, second only to the Colombo National Hospital.
