Kidney-related ailments afflict one in 10 Sri Lankans

Approximately 10 percent of the Sri Lankan population is afflicted with kidney-related ailments, consultant Nephrologist & adviser to SLKPA Association Dr. Sanjaya Heiyanthuduwa said.

He further said that there has been a notable increase in the burden of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in the country. According to data from 2020, a total of 164,000 individuals were diagnosed with CKD. He made these observations at the National ceremony to mark World Kidney Day held yesterday under the patronage of Health Minister Dr. Ramesh Patirana at New Town Hall, Borella.

Dr. Heyanthudawa alsor said that by performing urine test (UFR), blood serum creatinine test (Serum Creatinine), Urine Micro-albumin test (Urine ACR), abdominal scan test (USS KUB), kidney disease can be detected early and possible complications could be prevented.

Second Thursday in the month of March is observed as World Kidney Day. This year, the day fell on March 14.

The theme for the 2024 campaign is ‘Kidney Health For All’ and it focuses on the increasing burden of CKD and achieving optimal kidney care to overcome these challenges at different levels.
