The record breaking KWA's women's 200m Medley Relay quartet: Ganga Seneviratne, Ramudi Samarakoon, Akithmi Wasalathanthri and Minuri Bartholomeusz at the Sugathadasa Stadium Swimming Complex yesterday.

On Day Three of the National Swimming Championships held at the Sugathadasa Stadium Swimming Complex, Killer Whale Aquatics’ (KWA) women’s 200m Medley Relay team put on an outstanding performance, breaking the national record by over five seconds.

The relay team consisted of Ganga Seneviratne (BK), Ramudi Samarakoon (BR), Minuri Bartholomeusz (FL), and Akithmi Wasalathanthri (FR) secured the gold medal with a time of 2:04.07, surpassing the previous record of 2:10.28, which was also set by KWA in last year’s record-breaking relay.

Wasalathanthri, Samarakoon, and Bartholomeusz were part of the team, while Ganga Seneviratne replaced Johnpillai this year. This remarkable achievement contributed to KWA’s overall success on Day Three, as they won a total of six gold medals out of the 15 final events completed. Anusara Abeygoonawardane, the defending national record holder of the 800m Freestyle, secured the gold medal in that event. Additionally, star swimmer Matthew Abeysinghe easily clinched the gold medal in his specialty, the 100m freestyle.

Ganga Seneviratne from KWA also showcased her prowess by winning the women’s 200m backstroke gold medal in her preferred event. In the girls under-15 category, KWA’s Sheraya Amarasekara triumphed in the 200m backstroke, earning the gold medal with a time of 2:43.37. Tharulya de Silva from Leed’s International School claimed the silver medal in the same event.

Apart from the relay victory and individual achievements, KWA’s Adeetha Siriwardane, Nevan Senaratne, Dhinal Weerasinghe, and Kyle Abeysinghe secured the gold medal in the 200m Medley Relay, bringing the total medal count for KWA to six on Day Three of the championships.
