KOICA’s USD 4 Mn for Technical Colleges improvement project completed

Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) provided a grant worth US$ 4 million to the Education Ministry and Department of Technical Education and Training to implement the Capacity Building Project for Construction Courses Project during four years from 2021. Under the project, the selected Technical Colleges (Matara and Ratmalana) and Colleges of Technology (Maradana and Ratnapura) were facilitated with fully-fledged Manual Drawing Rooms, AutoCAD Rooms, Plumbing Workshops, theory classrooms, and sanitary facilities.

The renovated classrooms were provided with up-to-date equipment and tools to meet the labour market demands.

Students are teachers were provided with 189 guidebooks including a novel curriculum for the subjects of Architectural Drawing, Plumbing (Piping Works), and Computer Aided Design (CAD). New courses were commenced at the 4 Colleges by the beginning of year 2024 and the On-the-Job Training (OJT) strategies were developed by the second half of the year. The project was designed to provide benefits for approximately 210 number of students each year.

The project was successfully completed and handed over to the Technical Education and Training Department (DTET) on October 18, 2024 at the Department premises. Country Director of KOICA, Kim Myung Jin, Deputy Country Director of KOICA, Kim Yong Whan, Director General of the Department of Technical Education and Training, S.C.Jagath, the Project Manager from Bucheon University, Professor Choi Seon-Mook and other dignitaries representing KOICA Sri Lanka Office and the Department of Technical Education and Training were present.

The DTET Director General extended his deep appreciation to KOICA for its continued support in the development of the TVET sector in Sri Lanka. He further stated “The project was started amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic crisis. The dedication of all the officials of KOICA and DTET led the project toward successful completion. As a fruit of all the attempts, the students were privileged to learn using a well- developed curriculum, advanced equipment, and new technology. On behalf of DTET, I thank KOICA, Bucheon University, and all the citizens of the Republic of Korea for supporting the development of the TVET sector in Sri Lanka.”

KOICA Country Director stated “Construction and plumbing are well-demanded sectors in both local and international labor markets. A well-developed curriculum, On-the-Job training, capacitated teachers, advanced equipment, and a favorable learning environment would be a great opportunity for students who expect to excel in this field. By handing over this project to you, I kindly encourage you to ensure the effective operation and continuous maintenance of the resources provided by the Republic of Korea, in enhancing the capabilities of the youth in Sri Lanka.” Vocational Education is considered a major sector under the country-specific plan for the KOICA Sri Lanka Office. Since the year 1991, KOICA has provided more than 65 million US Dollars for the development of the Education Sector in Sri Lanka. Currently, KOICA is closely working with the Ministry of Education for the implementation of the TVET Career Platform Project in Sri Lanka (6 million USD) and the Establishment of National College of Education and Teacher Training System for Technology Stream at Kuliyapitiya Project (15 million USD).
