Sixty-two Sri Lankans who were illegally staying in Kuwait without visas were sent back to the country by the Sri Lankan Embassy in Kuwait under temporary passports.

They arrived at Katunayake Bandaranaike International Airport yesterday morning. Out of these 59 were female domestic workers and the remaining three were male domestic workers. A spokesman from the Sri Lankan Embassy in Kuwait said that they were a group of Sri Lankans who had fled from the homes contracted for domestic service and were working in various places for a monthly salary of Kuwait Dinar 250 by staying in temporary shelters in Kuwait without a visa.

They have registered at the Sri Lankan Embassy in Kuwait to come to Sri Lanka due to problems such as illnesses, aging, and other problems that have arisen in their families in Sri Lanka.

The Spokesperson added that more than 2,000 Sri Lankan domestic workers are currently registered at the Sri Lanka Embassy in Kuwait to come to Sri Lanka.

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Kuwait together with the Police, the Criminal Investigation Department and the courts had prepared temporary passports for them and sent them back to the country.
