Labour Minister Prof. Anil Jayantha elected President of SL–USA Parliamentary Friendship Association
Labour Minister and Deputy Minister of Economic Development Prof. Anil Jayantha was recently elected as the President of the Sri Lanka–United States of America Parliamentary Friendship Association for the Tenth Parliament.
The special meeting to revive the Sri Lanka–United States of America Parliamentary Friendship Association for the Tenth Parliament was presided over by Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne. US Ambassador Julie Chung was present as the guest of honour and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Members of Parliament and Parliament Secretary General Kushani Rohanadeera were also present.
During the meeting, Minister Prof. Anil Jayantha was elected as the President of the Sri Lanka–USA Parliamentary Friendship Association while Member of Parliament Harshana Rajakaruna was elected as the Secretary.
Speaking on the occasion, Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne emphasised the longstanding and significant engagement between Sri Lanka and the United States, describing it as one of Sri Lanka’s most important relationships. He highlighted that, as democratic nations, the bilateral relationship is built on mutual interests and shared commitments to strengthening the ideals of democratic governance. The Speaker noted that, Sri Lanka–USA engagement spans various areas, including political, economic, defence, intelligence sharing, education, and people-to-people connections. The Speaker also expressed gratitude for the assistance provided by the United States through USAID.
Speaking at the event, US Ambassador Julie Chung highlighted the longstanding relationship between Sri Lanka and the United States, which spans more than 76 years. “We stand together as partners and friends,” she stated, emphasising the breadth of engagement between the two nations. The Ambassador noted that the partnership encompasses critical areas such as education, disaster management, economic development, and cultural exchange, underscoring the enduring commitment to collaboration and mutual growth.
Speaking at the meeting, newly elected President, Labour Minister Prof. Anil Jayantha expressed his commitment to further strengthening and deepening the relations between Sri Lanka and the United States. He emphasised his dedication to fostering closer ties and advancing cooperation between the two nations in various sectors.
Addressing the meeting, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa emphasised the importance of establishing a Parliamentary Friendship Association to strengthen bilateral relations, foster legislative collaboration, and deepen ties between the two countries.
