The 14th showroom of the Sri Lanka Handicrafts Board (Laksala) was inaugurated in the tourist hub of Negombo on Wednesday (11 Feb), by Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Sunil Handunneththi.
In a statement, Minister Handunneththi said that the latest Laksala showroom was opened, intending to provide true value to the skill and creativity of Sri Lankan traditional artisans.
“Establishing a showroom in a major tourist destination like Negombo is a strategic step toward eliminating middlemen and connecting our rural artisans directly with the international market. Our policy is not just to sell products, but to strengthen Laksala as a “Brand Ambassador” that showcases our unique Sri Lankan cultural identity to the world,” he explained.
Minister Handunneththi further said that by securing the livelihoods of thousands of artisans involved in Batik, wood carving, pottery, brassware, as well as local gems and jewellery, the authorities have now made high-quality products that blend traditional knowledge with modern design and technology available at the new Negombo branch.
The event was attended by Gampaha District MP Champika Hettiarachchi, Additional Secretary of the Ministry Subhadra Walpola, Chairperson of the Handicrafts Board Sujeewa Senanayake, Chairman of the Lanka Design Centre Sisira Amarabandu, and several other officials. (Newswire)
