Lanka Lions made history at the Emirates International Dubai Sevens Rugby Championship by securing the Gulf Men’s Open title for the third consecutive year in a thrilling display of rugby.

In the pool stages, the Lanka Lions demonstrated their dominance, securing victories over Dragons (24-10), Dubai Sharks (35-5), and Shaheen (32-0). They continued their winning streak in the quarter-finals, defeating Doha Rugby Football Club with a score of 24-7.

In a challenging encounter against fellow Sri Lankan side Dubai Lankans, packed with national players, the Lanka Lions emerged victorious with a score of 19-12.

Facing the star-studded Band of Misfits team in the epic final, which included premier league players representing top UAE clubs, the Lanka Lions staged a remarkable comeback. Trailing 10-0 at halftime, they rallied through players like Kushan Indunil, Keponi Paul, and Dilshan Kelaniyangoda to secure a stunning 26-10 victory, clinching the title for the third consecutive year.

Led by fourth-year player Mohamed Abzal as captain, the Lanka Lions showcased outstanding teamwork and skill throughout the tournament. Abzal, the playmaker of the side, mesmerized the opposition with his sizzling runs. Dilshan Kelaniyangoda, the former Lanka Lions captain, played a pivotal role, having lifted the trophy four times since 2013.

The team also boasted the formidable presence of former Lanka Lions captain Adil, who excelled in the scrums, and the untouchable Kushan Indunil, a former national player from Isipathana/CH & FC. Tharindu Malikge, the pocket rocket and solid defender, served as the vice-captain, while other key contributors included Anojan Balasundaram, Shazard Deen, Sefa Waqa, Faris Ali, and Dayan Sabar.

The coaching duo of former Fiji national player Rockini Saimoni and former Trinity/CH rugby player Azarath Deen played a crucial role in guiding the team to success for the third consecutive year.

Azarath Deen expressed pride in the team’s journey, highlighting the grit, teamwork, and unwavering dedication that contributed to the remarkable achievement. He emphasized that the victory was not just about the trophy but a testament to the relentless pursuit of excellence, pushing boundaries, and making history in Dubai.

Additionally, Lanka Lions Socials performed exceptionally well, securing the runners-up position in the Men’s Social Cup. Despite leading 19-0 at halftime, they narrowly lost in sudden death to Dubai Sharks. Captained by Ramesh Milan, the team showcased a typical Sri Lankan style of rugby and displayed outstanding talent throughout the tournament.

Both teams were expertly managed by Roshan de Silva and Loanna Ratwatte, adding to the overall success of the club.
