Lectures continue online despite non-academic strike -UGC Chairman

University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Professor Sampath Amaratunge said yesterday (13) that although the non-academic staff of the universities are on strike these days, academic staff are providing education to students online.

He said that even though the university sector was closed during the entire period of the Covid pandemic, lectures were successfully carried out online. Prof. Amaratunge said even circulars have been issued that at least 25 percent  In research on higher education conducted online in Asian countries, it has been revealed that Sri Lanka is at the top in online teaching, he added.

Prof. Amaratunge also said that protests to win demands by workers should not be at the expense of students’ education.He said that the admission of students to the first year of the university is being undertaken these days and due to the strike of the non-academic staff, it has been hindered.
