Lightning advisory : Red alert issued to Western Province

The Department of Meteorology has issued an advisory for severe lightning in the Western Province, effective until 11.00 PM today (14 Jan).

According to the Met Department, red alerts have been issued to the Gampaha, Colombo, and Kalutara Districts. 

Meanwhile, amber alerts have been issued to the Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya, Ratnapura, Galle and Matara Districts. 

Stating that thunderstorms accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur at some places in the Western province, the Met Department urged the public to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by lightning activity. (Newswire)
