A person riding a motorcycle has been killed in a shooting incident in the Kahandamodara area, Hungama in Tangalle on Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified as a 39-year-old man who is a resident of the same area and a father of three children. The victim has been working as a Skipper of a fishing boat, Police said.
Police investigations have revealed that the assailant has used a Galkatas type firearm in shooting the victim.
The 39-year-old man, who was critically injured by the gunshot, died while being transferred to Tangalle Hospital for further treatment after being admitted to Ranna Hospital.
It has been revealed from the preliminary investigations conducted by the police that the murder has been carried out as a result of an argument between the deceased and the assailant due to a casual relationship with a woman.
Further investigations have revealed that both the deceased and the suspect had been having an affair with the same woman and as a result that there had been regular disputes between the two for some time.
A resident of Kahandamodara village in Ranna known as ‘Bopasidu’ has been identified as the murder suspect who has been previously arrested for possession of drugs, police said.
The suspect who shot and killed the victim has been arrested by the Hungama Police.
The victim has been followed by the assailant and was shot when he had returned from a fishing excursion of about two days earlier. He left his home yesterday at around 10:30 a.m. to go to the bank in Ranna town on a motorcycle, to deposit money and one of his friends had gone ahead of him on another motorcycle.
Police investigations revealed that the suspect had been waiting for the victim and had fired at him when the victim was passing by him.
At the time of the shooting, the motorcyclist who was riding ahead of the victim had run away leaving the motorcycle and his sarong he was wearing.
Investigations also revealed that the motorcycle used by the victim’s friend that was left behind by him when he ran away, had been borrowed from another person, the assailant had then taken that motorcycle after he had fled the shooting and had handed it over to its owner and left.
Hungama Police is conducting further investigations into the incident.
