Lyceum International School Wattala clinched the Mixed School Overall Championship for the sixth consecutive year at the MILO-sponsored 48th Sri Lanka Schools Aquatic Sports Championships concluded at the Sugathadasa Stadium Swimming Pool Complex on Sunday.
Led by captains Yonal de Silva and Sehanya Jayasinghe, Wattala Lyceum triumphed over approximately 30 prominent mixed school swimming teams from across the country. The team, consisting of 120 swimmers of both genders, showcased their exceptional skills throughout the tournament.
Under the guidance of Head Coach Mohomad Imran, the team attributed their consistent success to their dedicated training regimen. “Our coaching journey began in 2019, and since 2016, we’ve secured the Mixed School Championships,” stated Coach Imran. He credited the collaborative effort of both swimmers and assistant coaches Pradeep Perera and Hazni Hamad for their achievements.
Among the standout performances, Boys Team Captain Yonal de Silva claimed two gold medals and a bronze medal, earning the runner-up position in his age category. His victories came in the Under-18 50m Butterfly and 100m Butterfly events, along with a bronze in the 100m Butterfly.
Girls Team Captain Sehanya Jayasinghe also shone, securing a bronze medal in the Under-16 50m Freestyle category. Other notable achievers included Damiru Wickramatunga, who secured a bronze in Under-18 100m Breaststroke. Adithya Perera displayed versatility, clinching gold in Under-20 Boys 200m Backstroke, silver in 100m Backstroke, and bronze in 50m Backstroke.
Navanjana Siriwardena and Thevindi Methlini contributed to the medal tally, each grabbing silver medals in Under-18 Boys 50m Breaststroke, 100m Breaststroke, and 200m Breaststroke, as well as Under-18 Girls 100m Freestyle and 200m Freestyle, respectively.
The younger swimmers also impressed, with Pinsara Sadaham and Mohamed Aathiqu securing a bronze and silver medal, respectively, in Under-16 Boys 50m Butterfly. Inuki Muthuhetti clinched two golds in Under-12 Girls 200m Individual Medley and 100m Backstroke, along with a bronze in 50m Backstroke.
Sethija Gunasekara excelled in the Under-10 Boys category, winning gold in 50m Freestyle, silver in 100m Freestyle, and bronze in 50m Breaststroke. Rishini Theekshana secured gold in Under-10 Girls 50m Backstroke, and Sayone Rajapsaksha grabbed bronze in Under-10 Boys 50m Freestyle.
Jehan Siriwardena’s accomplishments included two silver medals in Under-12 Boys 50m Backstroke and 50m Breaststroke finals, while Vonal Perera secured silver in Under-12 Boys 100m Breaststroke.
