In a celebration of camaraderie and sportsmanship, the much-awaited 82nd Madras-Colombo Regatta is all set to take place at the prestigious Madras Boat Club on Saturday, July 29.

This annual event, which brings together rowing enthusiasts from India and Sri Lanka, marks a unique link between the two countries as they join forces to tackle common challenges through the spirit of rowing.

A 22-member contingent from the renowned Colombo Rowing Club will make their way to Chennai, departing on Thursday, July 27, to participate in this illustrious regatta – the oldest of its kind between two cities in different countries.

First established in the year 1898, the Madras-Colombo Regatta has stood the test of time, symbolizing the enduring friendship and cultural ties shared by India and Sri Lanka.

The regatta holds a significant place in the hearts of both nations, and the organizers have upheld a tradition where the host cities alternate each year to organize the event.

At the heart of this prestigious regatta lies the annual rowing encounter between the Colombo Rowing Club and Madras Boat Club.

The much-anticipated Men’s Boat Race, recognized as the second oldest inter-club boat race globally, only behind the famed Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race, forms the centerpiece of the competition.

With competitors rowing with determination over a distance of 1,000 meters, the victors of the men’s regatta will be honored with the esteemed Deepam Trophy. Similarly, the women’s regatta will see its champions proudly receiving the prestigious Adyar Trophy. The Madras-Colombo Regatta proudly promotes gender equality, offering separate events for both men and women to showcase their skills and dedication to the sport.

The regatta is returning after a challenging hiatus of three years, which was primarily due to the global pandemic. In the previous edition, gallantly hosted by the Colombo Rowing Club, Colombo’s exceptional performance secured them the coveted Deepam Trophy in the men’s crew category.

Meanwhile, Madras showcased their prowess and claimed victory by clinching the Adayar Trophy for the Ladies Crew in the exhilarating competition held in 2022.

As the date of the 82nd Madras-Colombo Regatta draws near, both teams have left no stone unturned in their preparation. The Colombo Rowing Club has expressed unwavering dedication to rigorous training, with a shared aspiration of securing both the Deepam and Adyar Trophies this season.

Their determination and zeal promise to deliver an electrifying display of rowing prowess and sportsmanship, adding yet another vibrant chapter to the enduring friendship between India and Sri Lanka.
